One of my children's favorite stories is The Tempest. I have indeed heard my middle daughter, 3 at the time, playing with dolls she'd named Caliban, Ariel and Miranda. I once told them a very shortened (and happier) story of King Lear and his daughters, and the next day Regan, Goneril and Cordelia showed up in the playroom as well. I love that.

My oldest, I think she was 6 at the time, once drew me a picture on the back of a restaurant placement over breakfast. A picture of her family? A princess, a bunny rabbit? No, she'd drawn - on her own - the opening shipwreck from Tempest, complete with Miranda on the shore telling the sailors that it was safe for them on the island, while Prospero looked on.

My 2yr old son insists that I sing him "What A Piece Of Work Is Man" (from HAIR, but also Hamlet) at night, and he has taken to singing it with me as best his little understanding of the words can muster. I can't begin to describe what that means to me.

Though I hate for them to grow up too soon, I can't wait for the day they get into school and some teacher hands them their first "real" Shakespeare. They're going to kick some serious butt. I couldn't be more proud.
