Like Mother, Like Daughter
A mother knows better than to leave sharp objects in reach of little hands, but diligence diminishes as children grow. My children no longer pull every book off the shelf to find a favorite. Bibs, diapers, and spill-proof cups are gone. Games, puzzles, and art supplies are here to stay.
Scissors are typically stashed after paper is hacked into a thousand slivers. When the double-edged blades glimmer on a table, little girls are tempted. The plant misses a few leaves. A shirt has random holes. Somehow hair escaped nipping. Until now.
Sunshine watches everything I do. She wants to be a mommy when she grows up; Mommy cuts hair. Practicing her skills on compliant little sister didn’t have the desired effect.
It’s not bad considering Sunshine is five. And scissors are sharp. And Sweet Pea has elvish ears.
Yes, I cut hair, but I wasn’t confident to work on this style.
After a few tears and finally laughter, Sweet Pea bounced from the beautician’s chair and fluttered around, light and free. Her pixie cut matches her personality.
Her sister promises not to cut hair until she’s a Mommy. She doesn’t have to wait that long, but please don’t say anything. I haven’t quite accepted this rite of passage.
My babies slip away day by day. That is by design, but it challenges this mother’s heart to expand beyond the hectic days and gather the moments scattered on the floor. The pieces of today will be treasures tomorrow. I need to remember that when I’m tempted to scream.

The pixie cut looks adorable!
Each one of my girls (yes, even the “baby”) has snipped at least a little of their own hair at some point. The middle girl (who has pulled this stunt twice – where did I go wrong as a mother?!) did a real hack job and ended up with a pixie cut not unlike your little pixie. Now I keep her hair cut that way because it really suits her. :)
My kids have worn that cut forever–it really is adorable and easy to care for. We have never had trouble with the girls cutting each other’s hair but my middle child has been known to take cuts into nearly everything else–clothes, curtains, doll hair, sheets and bed spreads, you name it. In her case she doesn’t even realize she has done it till after–though she is doing much better about it now.
LOL. They all do it- thanks for a few memories. Her new cute is too cute.
I remember when my six-year-old sister Jessica went at her bangs with a pair of scissors. My dad found her in the bathroom with one-inch bangs on one side and three inches on the other. Once he evened them out, she complained for days that she “looked like a robot!”
Aw, how sweet! I don’t think I ever cut my sister’s hair – or vice versa. But I did cut my own bangs. You know the look – super short, little girl bangs? I had them when I was about 5.
Oh no! Well – it does look adorable! I recently attempted to cut my boys hair – let me just say that I wish you could come fix theirs for me as well, although I don’t think a pixie cut would be the solution. Hee, hee
My daughter never tried this, but my nieces did cut holes in every pair of socks they owned one time. SIL did not think it was funny – but we sure did! ( :
Karen,
My husband was supposed to be watching them. I was upset, but quickly realized it could have happened on my watch, too. I don’t think you’ve gone wrong as a mother. ;)
Heather,
It really is easier to take care of. I had thought of getting it cut, but that didn’t change my immediate reaction. :O
Robin,
Thanks!
Julie,
Thanks for reminding me of that story. I giggled all morning at work.
Dianne,
I don’t think I ever cut my own hair. My dolls were typically bald though. ;)
Mandi,
That’s a cute story about your niece. My grandmother would have darned all those socks. I remember the ones she did for me. They were bumpy and uncomfortable, but I loved my grandmother so I never said anything.
And don’t give up trying to cut hair. It just takes some practice. I bought clippers with various size guards to cut my husband’s and son’s hair. They work really well.
The girls’ hair is harder for me. I think I can maintain Sweet Pea’s cut, but I was afraid to attempt it.
I like the way that Sunshine wants to e a mommy and so has started practicing now.
I’ve always cut my daughters’ hair until they wanted a stylish style. I’m OK trimming the style but could not create it form scratch.
My eldest daughter cuts my hair now whenever we are in the same country together.
The pictures really do tell the tale! You did a great job rescuing that trim job! :)
Too cute! We never had a haircutting incident — or any other misuse of scissors — until our third child. With inly two close in age, it was easy to just keep the scissors put up unless they were under supervision. But with three, suddenly there were scissors everywhere. Cookie Mouse’s haircut has only in recent months grown out enough that we could get it cut into a bob instead of just tying it back with odd ponytails! When she cut her own hair, though, she put it all very neatly into the trash.
She is too cute!!
My oldest son did the same thing to his hair and my youngest too. Must be an unwritten write of passage for kids – LOL.
Great pictures and your daughter is adorable with her pixie hair cut!

Oops! Well, it looks great, and it’s even better to have a story!
Yikes! Love the new cut on her! :D I think both of mine have done it to their hair before.
