Don’t Give Up on America- Love is Never in Vain
Have you ever found in history one single example of a nation thoroughly corrupted, that was afterwards restored to virtue, and without virtue there can be no political liberty.
Will you tell me how to prevent riches from becoming the effects of temperance and industry? Will you tell me how to prevent riches from producing luxury? Will you tell me how to prevent luxury from producing effeminacy, intoxication, extravagance, vice, and folly?
Yet all these ought not to discourage us from exertion, for…I believe no effort in favor of virtue is lost, and all good men ought to struggle both by their council and example. ~John Adams to Thomas Jefferson in 1819

Thanks, Renae, as those are encouraging words. I’ve been so dismayed at the extreme escalation of losing our Republic with complete disregard for our founding document. It seems in the last few months that it’s blatant and reeking with intent to dismantle what our founders created.
After all of that….I know everything and anything is possible and that we should always have expectations of virtue for all, including myself. The exertion is worth it.
Susan,
Yes, the loss of liberty and virtue is despairing. We need hope, but our hope is not in a politician. Representatives can help or hinder the preservation of liberty; no government can save us from our own greed.
We are so blessed in this country. Industry has led to wealth, but do we take it for granted?
As my husband and I examine every expense, I realize that much of what we consider necessity the rest of the world lives without. I am not advocating poverty, but I wonder if our view of poverty is skewed by abundance.
What a timely quote! I picture the current crisis eventually helping people get their priorities straight…I hope this is what God is doing right now.
Did you ever see the show “Affluenza”? It explains a lot about how our society got to this point. Of course, it offers secular ways of fixing the greed, but I’m hoping God sends another Great Awakening.
Barbara,
That is my hope and prayer, too.
I actually came across this quote awhile ago and saved it as a draft. When I came across it again last night, I realized it spoke to our situation even more poignantly now.
And no, I haven’t seen the show. It sounds about right though. I’ll look it up later.
I have to agree with Barbara, I am really hoping that God is at work in our country right now. The undermining of the constitution will not solve anything, the only real solution is God in the hearts of the American people.
Excellent! Excellent! That’s one to remember. Thanks for sharing. :)
Renae,
I just read your “about me” and you are such a warm and inviting person. You made me feel like I was visiting in your home and we were getting ready to sit down and chat.
Sincerely,
Beth from Pages of Our Life
Melinda,
I know God is at work! It might not be what we want or expect, but he is working to draw the hearts of men to himself.
Dana wrote an encouraging article about this very topic, The Heart of the Election Season.
Beth,
Thank you so much! You are welcome to visit anytime. Do you like tea or coffee? ;)
I love coffee with creme and hot tea with honey.
