Who Will Represent Me?
I’m still thinking about motivation, rewards, and consequences, but last week politics squeezed it’s way into my computer time and muddled my routine. Since the election invaded my mind, I will write about motivation later.
The presidential campaign has underwhelmed me. I ignored most of the rhetoric and commercials until last week. I had to hear Sarah Palin’s speech, which resulted in a flurry of blog posts. I’ve read so many contradictory statements my brain has whiplash.
I soothe the pain during my morning walk with friends. Our steps take us around the neighborhood while our words soar around the principles of government. What a way to start the day!
We talk about the history of feminism, the Declaration of Independence, the hope of liberty, and, of course, the individuals running for the highest executive office in America. The topics are endless and the prayer focus compelling.
Who will best represent us? Who will best represent me?
- I want my representatives to shrink the size of government.
- I want my representatives to uphold the Constitution, not rewrite it.
- I want my representatives to protect liberty, not encroach on it with more laws and more taxes.
It doesn’t matter if the person I’m voting for is the same pale color as me or even the same gender. It is ideas that matter. It is principles I want to discuss.
They glimmer once in awhile, but often they are covered with mud.

I’m afraid, unfortunately, that what you ask is easier said than done. We have people wanting office so badly that they will say what polls tell them we want to hear, but then will govern differently when they get there.
I actually admire some candidates that I disagree with in that they seem like they actually say what they mean.
I know it is. I am an idealist, but we live in a world far from ideal. Grasping for power is all too common, and it seems we like to elect individuals who promise to give us the moon even though it is not possible.
I loved this post. I agree completely with the points you made, and I too share your disdain for this year’s election. I am so over it it’s not even funny. What ever happened to government being FOR the people, all people? My vote for President? George Washington.
I know where you’re coming from. It seems the older I get, the more concerned I become about each election. Do you feel that way too?
In particular, now that some of my children are working adults, the phrase “we’re putting a large tax burden on our children and grandchildren” has real meaning for me. As in past elections, I just keep asking God for the leaders we need instead of the ones we deserve, and wait for Him to sort out the details.
Melinda,
Thank you. I don’t disdain the whole election, just the mud throwing. (Of course, there might not be too much left if that is removed.) I dig through it for the ideas that need to be examined though.
It our responsibility to maintain as much liberty as we can for future generations, so our votes do matter. However, it doesn’t mean I have to watch the commercials and participate in the slinging.
Barbara,
Yes, I guess I do. Perhaps, it has to do with the Scripture that states much knowledge bringing sorrow. (Ecclesiates 1:18)
And I pray for God’s grace, too. He works in the lives of men and nations, so I know we are not forgotten. May he lead us as we choose our representatives. May he give us strength to preserve liberty of conscious in our own hearts as we teach it to our children.
I’m with Melinda…where’s George Washington on the ballot? My daughter said she was said that he had died because she would have liked to have had the chance to vote for him.
I ask myself the same question. I watched both the Democratic and Republican conventions. I listened carefully to the words and ideas presented. I listened very closely and heard a *few* of the words, a *couple* of the ideas-principles I hold to but underlying all the political drama and fluff, the candidates seem to have a different sense of the words and ideas/principles than I do. The candidates and their parties seem to be plagued with some self-serving, power-hungry interests.
I am a flawed, imperfect individual and I know our elected officials are too. I also know there will never be a 100%, perfect candidate, party platform or civil government but shouldn’t the candidates have an interest in and a desire for upholding the Constitution, for liberty and self-government, preserving and nurturing it — shouldn‘t these be some of the ideas they talk about? That’s what I was hoping for and looking for.
Now with the Presidential election only weeks away, I am struggling with all of it and how to vote. I ask myself: who comes closest to my idea/principles? I pray for wisdom. May God have mercy on us and grant us wisdom in our mind-hearts, homes and the election.
Blessings.
Dana,
Can you imagine Washington’s reaction if he did live now? So much for his following his advice about party politics. :(
DJ,
Yes, power tends to corrupt. It takes men and women of solid character to resist it. We do need mercy and wisdom, but I don’t despair because God says he will grant us those things if we ask.
Our prayers are heard and they do make a difference. It is because of God’s mercy and the measure of Christian character we still have in this country that the Constitution remains. The ideas are there. We can still discuss them. We can bring them to remembrance. We can, at least, vote against increased socialism.
May God raise up the statesmen and women our country needs to hold onto and increase liberty as we do the work of digging for the principles and passing them onto our children.
We can still discuss them. We can bring them to remembrance. We can, at least, vote against increased socialism …. as we do the work of digging for the principles and passing them onto our children.
My primary hope is in God but I agree with you on this too. This is also a part of my hope. We still have time to keep our hearts right, to listen to God, to obey Him and to teach our children.
Blessings!
