Strolling in the Woods of Innocence

Time runs away peering from behind the trees. I dash to catch it, but my yearning is mocked. The imp remains out of reach.

Mother and Children by William Adolphe Bouguereau
Mother and Children

Stand still you slipping seconds. My cherubs are dancing like butterflies around my feet. Their laughter bounces off the mossy, gnarled oaks and drops as hidden flower buds. May the fragrant blooms refuse to shatter while the dusky eyes taunt me from the thick branch dangling over their heads.

Oblivious to my ache, the fairies continue to twirl in the bliss of childhood. My brave boy glances up. He aims his arrow and the mysterious gnome disappears yet again. The young man is becoming aware of the passing moons. His questions are unearthed roots crawling with life and set free for discovery.

He is the lookout for the tea parties spread on the stumps in the clearing. I wish he would join the frolic, but the invitation chokes. I glimpse the wink of time. My growing elf is exploring the forest searching for the path he will travel.

Time skips continually luring my children. They cannot resist the pull. That is as nature intended, yet these woods of innocence are precious to me. I step softly gazing at every flower knowing there are fingerprints on the petals. Every one is a gift to a mother who never imagined a heart could be so full.

Thanks for the meme links. I have already checked them out and they look great.
Also, your post today is beautiful. Do you right poetry?

  • Renae says:

    Michele,
You are welcome. I’ll try to send you others as I find them.

And thank you. I haven’t written poetry since junior high when my pen name was Hope October. Oh, yeah, it was as sappy as it sounds. My husband still teases me about it. :)

Maybe I’ll work on that a bit this year with my son. I think he will enjoy writing poetry.

Hi Renae! Thanks for sharing this. Its been sometime since I last did a blog hopping. i missed visiting your blog. reading your stories and hearing from you. I hope all is well with you. Keep in touch! I am now activating my first blog which is http://www.iamforeternity.blogspot.com although my blog which you used to visit http://www.homelife.blogsome.com is still active, I would want to keep the former since I know how to manipulate its command now, like posting pictures and doing basic post editing.

Keep in touch and be blessed!

    Marn

What a lovely and thoughtful post, Renae!

  • I understand these thoughts so well. My five year old wants a loose tooth so badly, and it’s all I can do to remember how she used to suck her little thumb.

  • Renae, I found your site from you twitter account. I absolutely love this writing you did. I’m a professional writer but I could never do anything like this. Wow! And it really hits home too as I have six children of my own, I also homeschool, between the ages of 19 and three so I know how fast the years fly by. I often look at my littlest one play and wish that I could just stop time. I love my grown children but I miss them little too.
Thanks for sharing this with us — I’m going to link to it from my blog so others can read it as well.

Thank you all for your kind words.

I wrote this in a quiet moment after the kids were in bed. When they are sleeping it is easier to remember that these years pass so quickly.
