Camper Bus to Minivan

Camper Bus Days

A young married couple arrived in Texas ready to change the world. They left the familiarity of Southern Idaho to attend Youth with a Mission’s training school. Anxiety mixed with excitement created an emotional wife hungering for peace. Two weeks into the lessons on faith, a challenge was issued. About missions. About family. About children.

The biggest lack of provision children have is not seeing God’s greatness.

Provide for children? Show them the greatness of God? That challenge was mine. I did not even want to consider having children, yet the whisper in my heart persisted. I argued, “We don’t have an income. We are in school. I’m not ready!” I fought and cried, and then I knew. A little life was already growing.

A mother’s joy rippled through my fears. Clinging to the knowledge of God, I endured the nausea, the exhaustion, and the outreach in the heat of summer. Crammed in a van traversing the mid-western states, I cried for lack of preparation. I wanted to decorate a nursery. Instead, I stored prayers in Heaven and pondered the responsibility of motherhood. I had so much to learn.

My husband and I traveled to Texas in our hippie bus for a biblical education. We believed the Word of God transforms lives. I still believe. That is why I homeschool. I don’t want to miss any opportunity to show my children God’s greatness. We enjoy his creation. We love each other. We live by faith.

Before our miracle baby came home from the hospital, our Volkswagen camper bus was traded for a vehicle with seat belts. Now we drive a minivan. And even though we don’t live in a foreign nation, I have a mission. It’s close to home.

Amen!!! When I first saw the title and picture, I thought, “Hmmm. I wonder who Renae is writing about?” Had to read a few sentences before I realized it was you! Wow! Nice!

I consider my children my mission field too!

    Jenn,
You didn’t recognize us? I thought you’d seen our Volkswagen bus photos.

Thanks for letting me know you stopped by.

What a great story! And the VW bus was definitely a surprise!

Thank you for sharing a glimpse of your mission field with us (in every post!).

AHA! I knew you were secretly hippies like us. ;)

    Julie,
My kids are becoming missionaries, too. The neighbor children enjoy playing here, and one little boy tells Bug over and over what a nice friend he is.

    Dana,
Thanks. We miss that bus. Almost every weekend we went camping. It is slightly hotter in Texas though. The trip back and forth to Idaho without air conditioning left us feeling a bit sick. Plus the fact that we could only travel at 50 MPH top speed.

Maybe it’s not the bus I miss so much, as the freedom to go. :)

    Andrea,
Yeah, we called that the “Summer of Love.” I’m just wondering if hippies can be bald, because my husband’s hair will not do that again. :)

Good stuff. For some reason I could NOT picture you in a VW bus. Nope. Couldn’t if I tried. :)

  11. Julie W 03-31-2008, 8:33 pm

I had a good laugh with so many fun memories flooding back when I saw that picture from our “Summer of Love”! I love it that I knew you back then and am so thankful for the years of friendship we share! Makes me miss the freedom of pre-kids days too, but when I think of your children, look at my son, and feel the new life kicking in me, I know it’s worth the sacrifices we make. Thanks for spurring me on and being a good example of motherhood. I love you, friend!

    Emily,
Yep, it’s really me. That is as wild as I ever got, unless you count my asymmetrical haircut and crazy clothes during my last years of high school.

  13. Renae 03-31-2008, 9:07 pm

    Julie,
I can’t believe how long ago that was! I’m glad we are on this journey together, too. Our memories are treasured for eternity, and our sacrifice for family has a glorious reward.

HEY!!! We had that SAME Orange V-W Camper! My family camped all over Western Europe in it! :)
I loved this post! I followed the link to your miracle baby and was amazed! God is AWESOME!!! :)

    Grace and Peace,
    Angel

    Angel,
I want to see pictures! Did you look like a hippie, too? :)

  16. Mandi 04-1-2008, 8:32 pm

Ahhh! I love the picture! Too fun!

The mission of motherhood is a hard but wonderful mission field to be in - thanks for sharing your mission field with us - I love reading your posts! ( :

Oh my good gracious! What hair on that man! Totally cracked me up, what a great photo! And what a wonderful, marvelous story.

  18. Renae 04-2-2008, 8:24 am

    Mandi,
Thanks. Yes, motherhood is full of wonder. I wonder what they are going to do next. :)

    Jennifer,
I thought this photo would be good for a laugh. Dylan worked for Health and Welfare when he looked like that. His previous job actually wanted their employees to look professional. ;) YWAM, of course, didn’t care, but he cut it all off before outreach.

  19. EEEEMommy 04-2-2008, 11:52 am

Sure a 3 year old hippie (it was 1976-1979)! ;) I wish I could show you pictures. They’re all slides, and even my dear husband has never seen them because the slide projector has been broken for years!

  20. Summer 04-4-2008, 1:39 pm

Great post Renae! My children are my mission field too. We are in full time ministry, most people just don’t recognize it.

  21. Renae 04-5-2008, 7:45 am

    EEEEMommy,
Oh, you traveled in a new camper bus! Our was held together with Bondo. ;)
