Sebastian,
I see your point about getting the parents as well as the children, but you are right. It takes tenacity to get what you want.

In my brief experience teaching in a private school, very few parents attended parent/teacher conferences. Public schools are likely no better. Until parents get involved I don't see much hope for change.

I see a lot of flaws in the arguement that children need to be in public schools in order to be salt and light there. But there may be a lot of good arguement to the idea that our family needed to be in a public school. They would get my kids' mom, which her love of reading, math and science, her masters in education and her unwillingness to back down. They would get my kids' dad with his strong faith and ability to patiently restate a request over and over until you give in. They would never get just our kids. Parental support of schools would be a whole lot more than helping with field trips and buying stuff for the classroom.

Laura,
Thank you. Yes, raising children requires great faith.

Jennifer,
It helps to put things in perspective doesn't it? We need to choose our battles, and I pray this is one we never have to fight. By staying involved now, we can keep liberty from eroding.

Melissa,
I didn't realize how much freedom I enjoy in Texas until I started reading blogs from homeschoolers in other states. Here there are very few requirements and no government oversight. I am thankful, but I don't take it for granted any longer.

Emily,
Yes, you touched on the issue of character. Thank you for reminding me that my children are learning how to live by watching me. There is grace, but I strive to show them the path of obedience.

Many ideas plead for our sacrifice, but I will not put my stake in the ground until my love for God is at risk. Conscious will dictate when that happens.
