Homeschool Binder Delivers Peace
I finally completed my lesson plan binder yesterday. It’s the one I wrote about last week and needed this morning. I’m never one for getting things done early. This binder is quite simple, but simple usually works for me.
To remind me that my tasks are an act of worship, a quote from C.S. Lewis is on the cover. I have shared it before, but it is worth repeating.
The most basic place of our sacramental living is in our marriages and homes and families. Here we live together in well-reasoned love for everyone around us. Here we experience the sacrament of the present moment.
The little tags say, “Home” and “Family.” I chose the colors to match the tabbed dividers that separate my categories: Schedules, Lesson Plans, Notes, and Resources.
A two column 5-Day Planner separates Bug’s independent work from the subjects he needs me to teach. (Thanks for the idea, Sue!) His quiet excitement for the responsibility filled me with hope. We started school late, but he completed four assignments before lunch without much help.
The bit of effort it took me to make this notebook already paid dividends! Imagine a morning with no whining and a boy anxious to finish his assignments. Isn’t it exciting when something works?

This is a great idea. We are really just beginning with home schooling, but it sure would be nice to be organized from the start. I love the quote too!
That is great! I just bought my daughter a rather large and nice planner and she carries it around everywhere. Tomorrow is back to normal school. I hope she starts up as enthusiastically she did to begin with.
The design of your planner is beautiful. I am so glad that it is working for you. The idea to seperate your son’s work into assignements that he does independently and assignments you both work on together was a winning idea.
We started class on Friday and the children were really excited and got everything completed quickly to my surprise. It’s as if they devoured their assignments willingly and with enthusiasm. It was great.
Binders may very well be the greatest thing since sliced bread! I’m glad yours is working. What a victory! Now you’ve got me wanting to post about mine! I discovered them a year or so ago. They aren’t near as beautiful as yours though! Have a great day:)
Blessings,
Melissa

Rain,
Binders work well to organize recipes, too. I may even make a blogging notebook.
Dana,
What a good idea to give your daughter her own organizer! Start her young! :)
Bug has a calendar that he likes to fill in his prayer journal, but we are sharing the lesson plans for now.
I hope your first day back goes well.
Hadias,
Thank you. I decided to use my scrapbook supplies to make a cover. I didn’t spend much time on it, but I’m learning that good enough is good enough. It has some color and I’ve always like Jessie Wilcox’s Smith’s art.
The idea to separate my son’s assignments is the best thing I implemented. If I hadn’t done anything else, that would have been enough.
I’m so glad your school is going well. Good days are such a blessing, because the bad days put them in perspective. :)
Melissa,
I look forward to reading your post! Honestly, I’ve never liked three ring binders much. They are so utilitarian. I prefer journals, but binders are undeniably the best for organizing. They are simple, pragmatic, and inexpensive. Decorating the cover helps a little bit though.
Wow! That looks terrific! I love that quote and it couldn’t be more true!
