Walking Stick

I need to recant. East Texas is buggy, but some of these insects are impressive. Today my son found a walking stick that was alive and well. Thankfully, it missed the dog’s jaws of death, so we were able to enjoy this amazing creature.

If you would like more information about walking sticks, my sidebar contains a couple links from our research. Look in recent bookmarks, where my del.icio.us finds are located.

  • You take really nice photographs!

Our dog also likes to play with the preying mantis and the walking stick. He always wins.

  • I love the passion of kids observing nature! You have a beautiful blog too. Thanks for reading mine.

    Jennifer,
Thanks again. I really like my digital camera.

I never saw praying mantis and walking sticks when we lived up north, but we didn’t have a dog then either. Maybe we are seeing them here, because they are trying to get away from Gus.

We are buggy here in Florida too. I love that when it comes time to learn. But really and truly, life is learning. Thank you for visiting my blog.
ps – I really like your blog.

I remember seeing walking sticks when I was little. What interesting creatures they are. (I clearly need to slow down…)

    Love that picture, Renae!

We have seen several praying mantids the past couple of years here in central IL. In strange places too. The first one we saw was on top of a 4 level parking garage.

They are not the best of flyers. It’s kind of a ‘keeping the claws crossed’ sort of flight in hopes that they land right side up.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a walking stick. But I’m not the most observant out in the woods either and it looks like they can be very incognito.
