I need to recant. East Texas is buggy, but some of these insects are impressive. Today my son found a walking stick that was alive and well. Thankfully, it missed the dog’s jaws of death, so we were able to enjoy this amazing creature.

I never saw praying mantis and walking sticks when we lived up north, but we didn’t have a dog then either. Maybe we are seeing them here, because they are trying to get away from Gus.

We have seen several praying mantids the past couple of years here in central IL. In strange places too. The first one we saw was on top of a 4 level parking garage.
They are not the best of flyers. It’s kind of a ‘keeping the claws crossed’ sort of flight in hopes that they land right side up.
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a walking stick. But I’m not the most observant out in the woods either and it looks like they can be very incognito.
