A Tribute-The Importance of Slumber Parties

Family Bible Reading

Do you remember filling your backpack with pajamas and toothbrush and toting it to your best friend’s house for a late night giggling session? My mother could get me to clean the whole house if the reward was spending the night with a friend. I have fond memories of cuddling in my sleeping bag on the trampoline, whispering about the beauty of the stars, and imagining what life would contain until, invariably, my friend would fall asleep. I never dreamed grown-up slumber parties existed.

My trip to Idaho was bittersweet. In many ways, it was like an extended slumber party. I stayed with my friend and her mom. It was just girls, plus one baby. We laughed a lot and stayed up late. We shared ice cream after dinner and talked about everyone and everything. However, the frivolity was overshadowed by the loss of a loved one. My friend’s father passed away on September 5, 2007.

Tearfully remembering the accomplishments of this godly man, we realized that his decisions were not based on the bottom line of his checkbook. His life was spent serving his family, friends, and neighbors. The treasures he left are stored in the lives of those he loved. A bit of that gold is in me.

While staying at my classmate’s house, I glimpsed the kind of family I wanted some day. After dinner, her thoughtful father always pulled out a big, black, Bible, selected a passage, and began reading. Julie and I were annoyed by the delay. We were anxious to start chatting again. Then our immature ramblings seemed paramount. Now I cherish the memory of a father discussing Scripture with his children.

Thank you, Dr. Jerral Wimberley, for including me in your family and blessing me with an enduring example of a father’s love.

This is so sweet - bittersweet.
Lovely memories do not always seem so as we live them, but thank God He gives us what we need from them.
    blessings!

    Dana,
My family was definitely glad to have me home safe and sound. They were so happy it made them sick. My husband and three year old got the flu the day after I returned home. Hopefully the epidemic is finished.

    Jacque,
Thank you. I appreciate your sentiments. God is always faithful to carry us through good times and bad.

Oh I am sorry for the loss, but rejoice that he is in heaven and will be able to see his family again.
It is nice to be able to spend time with life time friends and remember those golden days, isn’t it.
I just wanted to let you know that I submitted an article for the CofPG.
Hope you have a nice week!!
    As Always,
